The meeting provided a forum for the presentation and discussion of the most recent developments in the theoretical and practical aspects of Safety and Security Engineering.

The contributions are divided under the following headings: Modelling and theoretical studies; Risk analysis, assessment and management; ARAMIS: an integrated risk assessment methodology; Novel techniques, systems and devices; Information and communication technologies; Integrated technological systems; Fire prevention and protection; Infrastructures protection; Transportation problems; Population protection; Environmental protection; Emergency and disaster prevention, control, management and recovery; Terrorism prevention and protection; Case studies; Forensic studies; and Industrial environment.

Comprehensive Planning for Safe Learning Environments: A School Professional's Guide to Integrating Physical and Psychological Safety - Prevention through Recovery (School-Based Practice in Action) Review

See more picture

This book provides school administrators, school-based mental health professionals, and other educational professionals with the framework and tools needed to establish a comprehensive safe learning environment.  The authors identify four necessary phases to achieve this (prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery) and provide numerous examples and tools to help readers create safe environments, while also addressing students’ academic, emotional, and social needs.  An emphasis is placed on the importance of the balance between physical and psychological safety within a multi-tiered framework - it is not enough for students to know their school is secure; they must also feel they are safe and can turn to their teachers and school-based mental health professionals with their concerns.  An accompanying CD contains several valuable resources, such as forms, handouts, articles, and monitoring tools.

Reconstructing Mental Health Law and Policy (Law in Context)

Reconstructing Mental Health Law and Policy (Law in Context) Review

See more picture

The first title from the 'Law in Context Series' to fully consider the issues surrounding this subject, this text provides a critical and in-depth analysis of the current regime and the tensions within it by examining the development of contemporary mental health law in its social and political context. Dr Glover-Thomas charts the origins of mental health law from the 19th century to the modern health law reform programme including the provisions of the Mental Health Act 1983. The author also addresses the provision of community care and the disillusionment over the use of that policy that has followed. Importantly, the provision for mentally disordered offenders and the use of diversion is examined. Finally, there is a critical analysis of the latest mental health legislation, and some views as to the future of mental health provision in England and Wales. The book is designed to give the reader a better understanding of the law and policy in this field and is directed especially at legal, mental health and related professionals as well as postgraduate students studying mental health law as pa rt of an LLM or those taking postgraduate qualifications in Mental Health Studies. It can also be used as secondary reading for undergraduate students studying medical law.

Patient Safety: Achieving a New Standard for Care

Patient Safety: Achieving a New Standard for Care Review

See more picture

Americans should be able to count on receiving health care that is safe. To achieve this, a new health care delivery system is needed a system that both prevents errors from occurring, and learns from them when they do occur. The development of such a system requires a commitment by all stakeholders to a culture of safety and to the development of improved information systems for the delivery of health care. This national health information infrastructure is needed to provide immediate access to complete patient information and decision-support tools for clinicians and their patients. In addition, this infrastructure must capture patient safety information as a by-product of care and use this information to design even safer delivery systems. Health data standards are both a critical and time-sensitive building block of the national health information infrastructure. Building on the Institute of Medicine reports "To Err Is Human" and "Crossing the Quality Chasm", "Patient Safety" puts forward a road map for the development and adoption of key health care data standards to support both information exchange and the reporting and analysis of patient safety data.
